We run BackupExec on a dedicated server. It backs up all our other servers to a disk array hung off that server. Our exchange backup is about 19 gig total. I can run a full backup (from the exchange box) to disk (on the backup server) in about 40 minutes. It screams, and we are on 100mb switched, not gig ethernet. We then do a copy job to LTO tape from the disk backup. That takes about 20 minutes, since the disk array and tape drive are on the same server (different controller cards, though). You can create a backup-to-disk folder on a server remote from the BackupExec installation. You don't need a full install of BackupExec, nor do you need to create a new media server. You can run a backup job that copies from one location to another on the same server. I ran a few tests, but I'm not sure if it pulls the data from the source server to the backup server and puts it back on the source server or if it just copies it locally. I didn't look at packets, but perfmon shows a huge spike in network interface traffic while the local-to-local backup is going on. It looks like it's copying the data across the wire. You should test this yourself... If it is running across the wire, you may want to look at backing up to a centralized storage location instead. It will be more efficient in the long run, and you avoid the risks of filling a drive on the exchange server with backup files. It will also reduce the disk I/O on the exchange server, which will increase performance.
