Do you have multiple external IP addresses?
If so, then simply create a new sub domain on your external DNS service,
create an MX record for this subdomain pointed at your other external IP
address and external email will come in directly.
For your internal systems, create the sub domain on your internal DNS
servers, including MX records, but use the internal IP addresses
instead.
If the list server is using your Windows DNS for DNS lookups, then
create an MX record for your internal domain with the internal IP
address of your Exchange server so that the email stays on the LAN.

If you only have a single external IP address then you will have to
route both inbound and outbound email through the Exchange server. This
can be done with using an SMTP Connector to relay the email. I did this
for a client using Listserv last summer.
I typed up the details for my web site:

On Linux, you can install the freeware Mailman. It is a list server
software. In order for mail from outside to come to
@listserver.dplinc.com,
yes you would need to register this name with DNS.

Subject: List Service

Greetings all. We are trying to setup a list service (like this
Exchange
Discussions List) at our company, but aren't sure of the best way to
proceed. We have a Linux server and are trying to configure it to
receive
mail at @listserver.dplinc.com. Our current domain is @dplinc.com. Do
we
need to register @listserver.dplinc.com on the Internet? Or, is there a
way
to tie this into Exchange 2003? Were trying to keep it separate, since
we
don't want the moderators of the list server and the Exchange 2003
Admins
stepping on each others toes. We'd like mail coming to @dplinc.com to
hit
our Exchange 2003 server and mail going to @listserver.dplinc.com to hit
the
Linux server. Anybody have any suggestions on the best way to proceed?

Thanks.

Robert
