Yes, but they do support selling new technology especially when it has
Microsoft in the name.

MS does have a configuration that is fully supported using this method,
but I believe it recommends a separate NIC in your exchange server
connecting directly to the appliance to relieve the network issues, and
to make sure you don't try to use the device for any other network
storage applications.

I don't recall the KB article, but it was specifically referring to
Exchange 2003 and Windows Storage Server 2003.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies. I will have a look at the HCL and see what
comes up.

It seemed to me to be a funny thing to do: put a disk intensive program
and store across a network wire ...

The connection method for that connection is very important. Like
Michael Said it has to be on the HCL and exchange generally only
supports SCSI, SAN, and or ISCSI. NAS storage can give some latency at
the Disk IO level. Exchange is one of the MOST disk intensive
applications that you can run.

Last I looked there was maybe one NAS solution out there that supported
an Exchange Store and was on the HCL. NAS can be leveraged for Near line
storage, or maybe for an Archival solution but I would never put my
Store on it.

Yes the Exchange db's can be installed on a separate box. We have
several instances of this (for example, EMC, Hitachi, Storage Array's).
As long as there is a drive mapped to it you should be fine.

Subject: Exchange databases on NAS?

A friend has suggested to me that we move all our server data onto a NAS
device with a directly attached backup device. He suggests that the
Exchange databases and logs go there too. The NAS will be running
Windows Storage Server.

Can the Exchange databases/logs be stored on another box that does not
have Exchange server installed?

If so, are there any things to be aware of? I am told it will be cabled
with a Gigabit backplane between all the servers.

He also wants to put SQL databases there too ... anyone know if this is
possible too?!

TIA
Ian
