We actually do a lookup for these. DNS_VERIFY_DOMAIN=sbl.spamhaus.org is the entry in the SMTP section of one of my config files (PMDF on VMS/ALPHA) that basically says "check incoming mail against this list." If the check finds a match, the email message is rejected. It never gets into the email gateway, and certainly not anywhere near any of my Exchange servers.
