I haven't had issues with Mail Security in the 4.6 and 4.6 builds. 4.0
would give me some headaches, but they seemed to solve a lot of their
problems with 4.5/4.6. on 4.0, I had to turn off the option to scan
after a virus def update, because it would peg the CPU and mail would
back up heavily. If I didn't use that feature, it seemed OK.

I don't use the anti-spam side of it, I use I Hate Spam Server Edition,
and will be adding a gateway appliance since I Hate Spam has to run at
the mail store level which means spams hits the store that doesn't
really need to.

That being said, I'm still looking to switch off Symantec entirely. The
fiasco they had with v10.0 for desktops really turned me off. It need
TWO registry keys to turn off some scan items that would quarantine
Remote Administrator, they were not avaialble through central
management. They then put out 10.0.1 to have both off by default, with
1 available in the console to manage. Total stupidity on their QA/QC
people to let 10.0.0 fly with those settings. Top on the fact that
their virus defs are getting to be ridiculously huge, which means a lot
of wasted network bandwdith, I'm ready to go elsewhere.

I don't think you'd want Symantec Mail Security anyway. I inherited it,
and it's a big source of frustration. The AV works OK: it's caught
everything that's been thrown at it, but it uses a lot of CPU. The
anti-spam part, however, sucks.

Ahh... Ok. We currently don't have ANY Antivirus for Exchange. I'm
looking at trying to get something, and we currently use Symantec for
the network/desktop. Unfortunately, I think Symantec has stopped
supporting Exchange 5.5, which is what we currently use.

I've used it, and while the AV is good, the performance is not nearly
good enough. The problem is, it runs before Exchange IMF, so it has to
scan all the spam, which overloads it fairly quickly. Also, the way it
works is to use the command line tool, which needs to reload everything
every time, which is slow. It's 90% of the way there...

I have no personal opinion on AVG's email server product as I've never
used it. In general though my standards for what I will use in terms of
3rd party software on a mission critical server are pretty high. I've
used AVG on desktop clients on the past with success, but I'm willing to
let 10k other people try it on their Exchange servers before I do. YMMV

Has anyone used AVG's Email Server Edition on their Exchange servers?
I've got AVG Freeware on my wife's PC and install it on PCs that I work
on (for friends, etc.) Just wondering if anyone has tried AVG's
Exchange-compatible version.

What do y'all on the list like for scanning email?
        John
