I haven't tried, but if I do that I need to use multicast which I'm 99% sure
wouldn't work with our config. I tried it once and when it didn't work I
went immediately back to trying it unicast with the dual nics

Private nics are 10.1.1.1/255.0.0.0 and 10.1.1.2/255.0.0.0 ... Should that be
255.255.255.0 ?

Have you tried configuring NLB without a separate network card for the
heartbeat?
I ran once in to problems using a second card for the heartbeat and I
never really got it resolved even though I have used the same
configuration for other working network load balanced servers...

The NICs are not configured for teaming.

Are the NICs configured for teaming? If so, do you have it configured
properly? I ran into problems (which may have since been corrected
since
this was some time ago) where if I configured teaming and tried to
change it
after installing NLB, it simply wouldn't work.

Subject: FE NLB woes

Or maybe I'm just a fool and can't get it working ... Please prove me
wrong.

2 front-end exchange 2003 sp1 servers (fe1.domain.com fe2.domain.com)
Both
have 2 nics The 2 public nics are on the same subnet and the 2 private
nics
are on their own subnet, configured happily at 10/half as MS says to do,
connected with a crossover cable

I fire up nlbmgr on fe1.domain.com, create my cluster:

cluster.domain.com
With an IP address in the same subnet as the public nics of the servers
Point it to the public interface on fe1.domain.com and it creates the
cluster.

At this point I can ping everything happily and go to
http://cluster.domain.com as I'd like.

Then I try to add fe2.domain.com the same as I added fe1.domain.com and
the
whole thing goes to hell. At this point I can't ping cluster.domain.com
or
fe2.domain.com but I can ping fe1.domain.com ... So it looks like
fe2.domain.com took over and somehow screwed me?

After doing thing 10 different times each trying from both servers
having it
fail, removing the cluster and starting over I get the same thing every
time.
I've tried this both with and without the windows firewall enabled on
these
servers. All of the hardware is identical HP DL360s.

Thoughts?
