Ok. I'll bite.. how? :-) Is that under the "IMS" and the Security tab? On that tab, if I hit "edit" I see I can require Windows NT challenge/response authentication and encryption" for outbound connections. I don't see any sort of authentication option on the routing tab.

Configure so that relaying requires authentication. How do I require authentication on SMTP? We have two exchange servers which are both exposed to the internet. I see on the IMC under the "Connections" tab is a section labeled "Accept Connections" which is currently set to "from any host." Should I set it to "only from hosts using authentication"? How will that affect my Outlook users? thanks John -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Ed Crowley [MVP] Sent: Thursday, August 25, 2005 3:19 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: selectively enable routing in Exchange 5.5 The easiest way is to require authentication. To best guard your box from relay, do this on the SMTP virtual server on an Exchange server that is not exposed to the Internet and have your users direct their SMTP clients there. If you can't do that, make sure you enforce strong password requirements. I'm wanting to allow a handful of machines to use non-Outlook clients to send email to the outside world, and right now that's being blocked by the anti-routing provisions... At the same time, I don't want us to become a spam relay. Any help would be appreciated... I'm NOT an Exchange admin, I just got it dumped on me and am having to learn how to do all this as I go.
