Well, that's certainly wierd... I'm not sure what fixed it, but I'm now able
to view the inbox of the "announcements" mailbox. I deleted and recreated it
with a completely new display and directory name and then gave the
"genericuser" mailbox "reviewer" access to that mailbox and the inbox and
after logging out of Outlook and logging back in, the "genericuser" has
access.

I think that method requires mailbox rights. Instead, try having them use
File > Open > Other User's Folder... and they can add the folder to their
Outlook bar or navigation bar.

It's hard to tell what you're doing because you haven't detailed exactly
what rights you've granted and where.
You should grant at least "reviewer" rights on the root (Outlook Today)
folder, then whatever rights you want to confer on every subfolder. You're
doing this with Outlook, right?

Well, I've tried this and I'm having some issues. I did end up creating a
mailbox for the "generic user" which we won't use, if possible (just there
for access reasons.) and created a new 'shared' mailbox that we will use for
the people who log onto the network as the "generic user" to receive
messages. Unfortunately, whenever the "genericuser" user tries to open the
"announcements" mailbox, they receive the message "unable to display the
folder, you do not have permission to log on." I initially gave the
"genericuser" reviewer access to the "announcment" mailbox, but raised that
to owner, minus any delete options and still am not able to expand.
Any suggestions?

You can't unless genericuser has a mailbox. No matter what you do, you end
up having a mailbox on which the users have "User" right because it is that
mailbox to which they log on using Outlook. Seriously, security- and
accountability-wise there's no good way to do what you want without giving
them their own mailboxes.
As to your lock-down problem, this looks like a perfect application for a
terminal server. You could also buy or run an app that automatically
generates the Outlook profile when they log on. Or you can use OWA, which
would be much more usable to them if you upgrade to Exchange 2003.

No, right now, the people using the "genericuser" login (that's not really
the login, but... <G>) do not have email boxes. What I was wanting to do was
avoid having to give them all their own login and configure the email for
all of them.
So, I guess what you're saying to do is what I was thinking... create a
"shared" mailbox and give the "genericuser" account the ability to send and
receive email, but not delete. Since this is going to be internal-only,
we're not overly worried about disguising the identity. The main problem,
for me, is that these desktop machines in the call center are locked down
using a 3rd-party app and I don't want to have to go out and reconfigure all
of them every time they re-do the call center seating charts.
My understanding is that The Powers That Be want to make sure that
information gets to the call center employees faster and more reliably than
it's been getting to them, and TPTB feel that letting them have internal
email is going to enhance communications. I'm worried about two things: 1)
misuse of company email (albeit internal-only) to send stuff to their
buddies across the call center and 2) I don't want to have to be creating a
couple dozen unique usernames and passwords, not to mention unlocking the
desktops, letting 'em change the passwords, and reconfiguring email all the
time. Oh, yeah... and viruses. Then again, if they are using Outlook, it
doesn't matter if they're using their own, unique ID or if it's a shared
mailbox.

First, the genericuser account should be protected with a password known
only to an administrator, and users should log on with their own user IDs.
Do do it the way you suggest, with a shared ID, serves to hide their
identities and therefore violates security principles. Further, any one of
them can change the password and then deny doing it, locking everyone out,
and any one of them can send from that mailbox, with their identities
hidden.
Do these "generic users" have their own mailboxes? If so, then you should
put them all in a distribution list and grant that list permissions on the
mailbox folders, restricting the ability to delete, then have each of them
open that mailbox as a second mailbox.
You can also put them in a security group (NT group) and grant that group
Send As right on the mailbox if you need them to have that capability.

I am being forced to give a bunch of call center employees access to
Exchange (internal-only). What I would like to do, if it's possible, is
limit their ability to delete emails. My first thought is to create a
generic email address that would be shared between all of the users and not
permit them to delete emails, so that when an announcement comes to that
email address, it can't be deleted by the first user to see it.
I figure I can create a mailbox that is owned by someone else and give the
call center users "reviewer" access and give the "team leads" / management
read/write access so they can delete the emails after say, 30 days or
whatever. But I'd rather create a generic mailbox and make that mailbox
owned by the generic user (who already exists) but limit their ability to
delete emails. That would also remove the "coolness" factor of being able to
email all your buddies on the floor the same joke, etc. and reduce the
likelihood of misuse.
Basically I want to have a mailbox "genericuser" that is owned by
"genericuser" but "genericuser" can't delete any email and there are about
20-30 people using the "genericuser" ID to log into their PCs. Is this
possible in Exchange 5.5 or do I need to create mailbox "Generic2" and give
"genericuser" reviewer access to that mailbox and "supervisor" read/write
access?
