It has been my experience that Microsoft SMTP will always fail at that
point in the tests regardless of Exchange or just IIS. I have even seen
the test fail at that point in 2003 SMTP.

I agree with Chris though it isn't really failing the relay simply
failing that specific test methodology. I don't know if it will do any
good to submit a request to the abuse.net relay test group and ask them
to update the testing for other SMTP engines though it might be worth a
try.

That's a test for a sendmail bug which used to allow for relaying. Your
server didn't relay the mail, it simply accepted it.

Our new Exch 5.5 SP4 IMC server was run through the abuse.net spam relay
test. It passed the first 5 tests, but came up with this on test 6:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------
Relay test 6
>>> RSET
<<< 250 OK - Reset
>>> MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
<<< 250 OK - mail from <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
>>> RCPT TO:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
<<< 250 OK - Recipient <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Relay test result
Hmmn, at first glance, host appeared to accept a message for relay.

THIS MAY OR MAY NOT MEAN THAT IT'S AN OPEN RELAY.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------

This hotfix was applied:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;837794

Is there another hotfix needed to patch this potential relay exploit?

Thanks for any help,

joon yoo
