Shortening the retention to limit the possibility of discovery is something
that might have worked back in the 18th century however Email has the
extraordinary tendency to exist in multiple locations and you or your
organization does not always have control over that location. Destroying
data might also destroy the exact evidence you might need in saving you from
a conviction.
It also might not hold up in court as you knowingly destroyed evidence.
There are plenty of cases on this already. After checking some goverment
info
(http://www.archives.gov/records-mgmt/publications/disposition-of-federal-records/chapter-5.html
) state the outlines on how disposition of Federal records needs to be
handled.
That idea is a myth and saving it on paper is wrong in so many different
ways. It is an example of wasting taxpayers money, not to mentioning
unfriendly for the environment by using paper.

Well this is goverment so of course its stupid!
So how is it done out in the world, not everyone has fancy archiving
solutions and I know one of the trends is to shorten retention time to
limit the possibility of discovery.
