But we were promised that clusters would get rid of that :)

Yup. Scheduled maintenance periods are a must for most systems.

One of the premises of Exchange clustering is that you can apply
fixes/patches/service packs on the passive node while the active node is
humming along, then do a ***quick*** failover and patch the other node.

In reality it is not always true. There are some patches (not
necessarily Microsoft patches) out there that require both nodes down.

Also even Microsoft's own Exchange 2003 Service Packs are not so
transparent to the user community as they require System Attendant to be
offline while you upgrade it.

If you implement Exchange 2003 clusters properly they work great,
allowing for all the 9's you need.

I don't like the idea of "clustering Exchange as a redundancy solution".

But Exchange 2003 (compared to Exchange 2000) actually allows moving the
clusters to different hardware quite nicely. I like it even better than
/disasterrecovery because cluster resources are totally hardware
independent.

That's a feature? I'd more lump clustered exchange in the "bleeding
ulcer"
category.

I guess that was my question, perhaps I asked it the wrong way. What
would
be those features that we would not be getting by running Exchange
2003 Ent on Windows 2003 STD?

Many Thanks

If you don't need to take advantage of Exchange features which would
require
the enterprise version of Windows there's no downside.

Good Afternoon Gents

Any downside to running Exchange Enterprise 2003 on Windows 2003 Server
Standard (Not Enterprise)?

We were going to run it on Windows 2003 Server Enterprise but we may not
have adequate licenses.

Are the differences only OS related or is the Exchange application
affected
as well?

Thanks A Bunch
