There are a few, very specific situations where ESEUTIL is called for. In
general, there is no reason to take your stores offline and run ESEUTIL. It
does nothing to help the server along, and the amount of time it takes just
adds up to unnecessary down time in almost all cases. There's certainly no
need to run ESEUTIL on a regular basis for "maintenance" - Exchange's online
maintenance is darn good.

I've NEVER run ESEUTIL unless there was a real, specific need to do so. If
you feel you must must must run it, then I'd use a copy of the database and
run ESEUTIL against it on a different server. I dunno why one would do this,
except to practice for a critical situation where ESEUTIL would actually
come in handy.

Offline maintenance should not be something that you do to an exchange
server, ever.

I am getting close to publishing an official manual for ESEUtil. In the
conceptual topics about each mode, there is a section that covers what not
to do. Offline maintenance is mentioned in this document, as a no, no.

Go exchange in my mind is the same as phone based toner salesman, and the
guys who come door to door and try to sell you 30,000$ of windows that would
cost you 3,000$ at Lowes, but the installation is somehow free, and that
price is only good right now.

Whitespace is not a problem, and as a matter of fact, its recommended that
your databases have around a 20% section of whitespace. The reason for this
is that whitespace can be written to in a much more efficient way than the
option of re-adding on-disk space to the database for each write.

You're right on the money regarding offline defrags. The only time you
really need to do this is when a large number of mailboxes have been deleted
or moved, and your whitespace is approaching 40-50 percent of your total DB
size.

I'd say you're in great shape on that DB, and no, whitespace will NOT cause
missing emails/unusual behavior etc. This would be caused by table or page
corruption in a database, which shouldn't happen in Ex2003 unless there are
disk issues.

I've been looking at GOExchange because of the boasts that the manufacturers
make about it and the doom scenario they put out.  It seems that the product
uses ESEUTIL and ISINTEG on a regular basis to keep white-space at bay,
amongst other things.

But my research of best practice tells me that doing offline database
maintenance is not required unless there's a major change, such as the
removal of a lot of mailboxes.  I haven't ever heard of the performance
issues in Exchange that they talk about: unusual behaviour, lost messages,
etc unless there's an underlying hardware problem.

I've had a 1Gb mailbox removed as a user has left the organisation.  I have
1378Mb of free space after online defragmentation, and a priv1.edb of
18,714,024 bytes.

Do I need to do an offline defrag or can I let it go?  I know that I don't
need GoExchange.  There are no problems with the system so I'm inclined to
leave it alone...
