OK. It is now fixed. Chris, you put us on the right path - thanks. Problem was that he had a local user on the box that was not a domain account with the same name as the domain account. And, contrary to what I was told, he was *not* using domain\ntusername to log in, only ntusername, since this is a one-domain forest.
