Google IS my friend, and I had found and followed both articles. But both
articles assume that the old box is still available, and give no clues as to
how to remove a dead box (that persists in ESM and AD).
Thanks, Dean.

Thanks, Ed. I had seen this article, but it *seemed* to remove the
entire
Exchange org, rather than just one server. Did I read it wrong?

Subject: Deleting dead Exch server
Non-production environment; Server 2003; Exchange 2003; both Standard.
I used the swing to upgrade from an older box to a newer one. Both
are
DCs.
I went through all the steps to remove the first Exchange server, and
then
turned off the old box without uninstalling anything, just to make
sure
that
everything AD and Exchange had transferred cleanly, and that I'd have
a
rollback option.
Naturally, the old box died while it was off line. So now I have a
phantom
Exch server in ESM and AD, and a phantom DC in AD.
I know how to clean out a phantom DC, but the Exchange part I'm not so
sure
about. ESM won't even let me touch it --as soon as I click on the
phantom
server, ESM seizes up. If I did a metadata cleanup on the old server,
would
that cleanly dispose of the Exchange server, or is there something
else I
need to do?
