mail recipient you're looking for?

Colleagues,
I seem to be unable to find a user by their email address in Active
Directory. I get into ADU&C, type the email address in the Advanced tab,
and nothing. Even if I search for anyone whose email address starts with
an "a" I get nothing.
What's the trick?
