I'm looking at how we backup our Exchange server as I'm about to migrate to a new server.
We currently use ntbackup to dump to disk, then dump that to tape. We use Commvault who I believe make a very capable Exchange agent though we don't have it yet. Do we have any other options? I ask as I believe there is a VSS backup method that effectively gives "full speed" backups vs. the 1.2gb/min or so that the streaming API can product. I've been digging around and I see the likes of Paragon have white papers on using their "Drive Backup" program specifically to backup Exchange 2003, but I'm a little unclear on whether a specific type of VSS aware program is needed - I believe it has to send a certain request to start and end the backup so that the database is marked as backed up and the logs are purged?
