so if i am in my inbox folder, and hold down the shift key the item in the
inbox never touches the deleted items folder, it is deleted right from the
inbox folder, so to recover this you would have to turn dumpster always on
registry edit ??

Not always...delete this message while holding the shiftkey.  Delivering
items to a PST would also be an instance were the message left the IS
without being placed in the deleted items folder.

If you plan on recovering things that never resided in the deleted items
folder.
