It should give you an unknown user error, unfortunately, it isn't getting
far enough along in the process to do that. It's failing on the host
resolution before the unknown user error can occur. Maybe there was a
transient issue with a DNS server somewhere.

Subject: host unknown message for invalid smtp address question

one of my user sends a message to another user, same exchange 5.5 sp3
site, get the message:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.
      Subject: Assistant
      Sent: 8/20/01 10:40 PM
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' on 8/20/01 10:40 PM
Unable to deliver the message due to a communications failure
The MTS-ID of the original message is: c=US;a=
;p=KATZ-MEDIA;l=NYCEX2-010821023942Z-5078
            MSEXCH:IMS:KATZ-MEDIA:NYC:NYCEX2 3902 (000B099C) Host Unknown

the only problem is, his default smtp address is KATZ-MEDIA.COM.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] is an invaldid smtp address for me.
