so you then have to have IIS on that box as well?
My original thought was to keep IIS off of my xch boxes . . .

Your other alternative (which is what we do, as a very small
institution) is to run E2K and OWA access on one box. Be sure to use
SSL.

There is no OWA 2000 "component" per se. Its not optional, its part of
any
E2k install.
To create the Front End server, you would need to install Exch 2k EE,
then
check the "Front-End Server" box under properties.

okay, bear with me here . . .

assuming it installs in roughly the same way xch 5.5 owa does, I only
install that owa component on the front-end iis server or do you have to
do
an "exchange 2k" install now + xch 2k owa? Or do you simply have to blow
a
XCH 2k EE license for any machine running owa in a front-end/back-end
"enterprise strength" configuration?

No, but to put OWA 2000 on a stand-alone Server you need to implement a
Frontend/Backend solution which requires at least one Enterprise Edition
for the Frontend server machine.
