I strongly recommend against using a network share to store the temporary db
unless you absolutely definitely have to. If you don't have disk space for
it, just add a few disks and create a temporary new partition on the server.

You Need to do a off-line defrag to regain the lost space. If you don't
have room you can use network space to do the defrag of the database and
then copy the compacted database back.

There's a Q article about it on the MS support site.

Subject: Fragmentation in mail database

We just setup a new mail server and I have been moving bunch of
mailboxes to
new mail server. As a result of this, the old mail server has tons of
empty
space and needs to be defragged. IS this something normal to do?

Or is there any other to accomplish the same thing?

Thanks
Davinder
