You don't mention how it stops...Is it a BSOD? or what. I had similar problems where it would lock solid but still answer a ping which I traced to a faulty RAID card...it happened during the backup. I have also had a corrupt pagefile do this. Only solution was to move pagefile to a different partition, delete the old one and move back to original location.
