Agree with the mirrored OS drive outside the RAID for recoverability &
removes the system from exchange.

Trouble with the single RAID 5 is that all the stores & logs write to what
is in effect a single drive. Thus a busy system using both Private & Public
Information Stores will be sluggish - AND THAT'S WHAT I HAVE INHERITED!

My ideal would be (in addition to the mirrored OS drives) 4 more drives,
mirrored as two pairs, one for Private Information Store the other for
Public.

Also, Create a spare partition on the OS mirrored drive(s), formatted as FAT
and write the log files to it.

It'll fly
Steve

I second this
Had the same problem with a HP server 3 - 18GB in raid 5
one went down..dead gone... In Critical mode..then the second went. dead

I got really lucky, in that on the mylex raid card this thing had.. I could
try and force the second back online... It worked but taught me to always
have an online spare.

Me if I only had five bay's for this and only five. Im no exch guru like all
these guy's... But Id go for the whole thing on the raid 5 with an online
spare. Heck I'd even put a tape drive directly in the box.

Actually thats what I do 4 drive bay's (CPQ ML350). 18GB 10K drives, 3 raid,
1 online spare. DLT tape drive in the box just for the exch. ~120 mailbox's
768MB ram
it just seems to sit there and run

2 cent's

The only problem I see with using three drives is boy does it suck when one
goes down and your trying to get another one hoping one of the other two do
not go down. Trust me it sucks. I had one go down and before I could get
another one one of the other two went down. Now I will never have just
three.

I forgot to mention that I have about 250 mailboxes and my store is about 10
gigs...so I don't see a issue with using 3 18 gigs raid5 for the store....

Me... I'd add a 4th HD to the raid 5 for Online Spare.

there's also a bit in the FAQ about optimum HD config for exch55. I think it
mentions a mirrored pair also just for the log's.

I am moving my 5.5 server to a new box soon.
It is a Dell 2550 with 1.2 gigs ram and 5 18gig 10k SCSI drives with 128Meg
Raid I am planning to use the first 2 drives mirrored for the OS and the
other 3 for a raid 5 stripe for exchange.... If this is or is not a good
setup, then any advice would be appreciated.

Thank You,
