Jeffery --
(read this twice, I'm sleepy and not very coherent. Usually I'm not sleepy --but
still not very coherent!)

The good news is your problem has nothing to do with Exchange.

The bad news is your problem has something to do with your VPN setup. It sounds
like you can ping your file server but not your exchange server, and not any other
machine on your network??

I'm thinking you don't have your firewall set up to allow traffic into your file
server, right? So when you ping your fileserver, the IP address that gets "pinged" is
the INSIDE address, right?

Your exchange server most probably has a "conduit" in your firewall to allow smtp
traffic (and maybe web also?) into your network, so your exchange server has an
"inside" and an "outside" ip address. When you ping your exchange server from the vpn
client, does the inside or outside ip address show up? (I'm betting the outside
address shows up)

If the outside address shows up that is your problem! Your VPN client is "inside"
your firewall, and can't ping the outside address.

If you change the client DNS to your inside DNS server that might take care of the
problem.

Or, add an lmhost file to your client system with your exchange server name and the
INSIDE ip address.

Some very early versions of the CISCO PIX softare had a problem similar to this, when
you did an NSLOOKUP from "inside" your firewall it would return the "outside" address.
Don't know about the Sonic hardware, but check for most recent version of it's
software!

The Network has Two windows 2000 servers, one for Information starage (I can see), and
one with the Exchange 2000 software installed (I cannot see). They have DSL
connection to the internet with a Sonic firewall w/ VPN installed. Then all other
users computers.

Is the Exchange server on a different box to where your VPN set up exists. I
think we need some more info on
your set up, ie......is there a firewall involved?
