I can tell you from first hand experience, like many others I'm sure, this is not true.
Automating it, as Pete has found, is a whole new can of worms. Change your reading material to find out what the RSM is and how it works with regard to the 2k version of backup. My take is the RSM is Microsoft's feeble attemp at something like a system catalog (from my old MVS days).
