Did you check the event logs as Chris suggested? They should tell you everything you need to know concerning this issue. My gut reaction is that the users are NOT logging in with the account name, but instead are using something like their Alias name.
Also, do you have cross-over account names? Could you have two accounts with the same name? The event viewer is where you need to be. Once there, find where a user having trouble logging in is and read it!
