Thanks for suggestion.
Checked the application log but forgot to check system log. An error message
appeared in the sys log for a failure to connect to tape drive the same time
the app log message appeared. It appears that there is some intermittent
connection problem with the connection to the tape drive.

The backups are usually run from a batch file triggered from the scheduler
in the evening. I ran a backup from desktop today and it worked fine. See
how things go tonight.
