This is exactly what I was looking for.  I was just at ASB's Site and didn't see this under "Exchange".  Anyway, thanks a lot everyone.

PS  A few of you Emailed me and said (3) disks- RAID 5 is fine, and one person was using a single disk.  You may want to look at this info on ASB's site as well as the info Don posted- there are significant advantages to using 7 drives- 3 RAID sets...

Subject: RE: 5.5 Raid Config

The below suggestions were given to me by our fearless leader Andrew S. Baker for a question I had on my SQL server's disk configuration. I believe similar configs are suggested for Exchange as well.

I'd say you need 7 drives minimum for a RAID5 config [1]:

* 2 x 9GB (or 18GB) ----- RAID1 (OS and pagefile)

* 2 x 18GB (or 36GB) ----- RAID1 (Database Logs) ---- Transaction logs

* 3 x 18GB (or 54GB) ----- RAID5 (Databases) ----- Information stores

OR 6 drives minimum for an all RAID1 config [1]:

* 2 x 9GB (or 18GB) ----- RAID1 (OS and pagefile)

* 2 x 18GB (or 36GB) ----- RAID1 (Database Logs) --- Transaction logs

* 2 x 36GB (or 54GB) ----- RAID1 (Databases) ----- Information stores

Why do you think that 3 -  9Gb in a RAID 5 config is “not good enough”?

I’ve had a drive fail in that configuration and the server/ Exchange/ OS stayed up through the whole thing.

I don't know if you'll find anything that's exchange specific.  There's no reason why you can't just run it on an 18gig scsi disk.  I am.

That being said, uptime is the primary reason for going to the various Raid levels.

Subject: 5.5 Raid Config

I need to set up a new Exchange Server and am looking for anything that Microsoft has written about Exchange 5.5: RAID/Performance.  I am being asked why I can just buy a single 18G SCSI disk instead of multiple disks with mirroring and RAID 5.  (Also want to know why (3) 9G Scsi's with RAID 5 isn't good enough for me.)

I know this has been BEAT TO DEATH, but could someone please direct me to anything that MS has written on this subject so that I can print it out?  I am in the Disaster Recovery White Paper and am not finding the suggested Config.  It's not in my New Riders 5.5 book either.

Thanks in advance.
