Please do. Sometimes I answer these things off the cuff.

IIS SMTP is an SMTP transfer agent. It's not good for providing mail
services for a company. It will send email for a web-based or other
application. It's certainly good for mail relay purposes:

A mail server that this person is looking for would require a five mailbox,
client accessible solution.
Some options:
pmail http://www.pmail.com/
qmail http://www.qmail.com/
imail http://www.ipswitch.com/products/imail_server/
jmail http://www.jmail.com.my
dmail http://netwinsite.com/dmail_first.htm

Hmmm... seem to have a theme here.

How about with two letters:

slmail http://www.slmail.com/
ntmail http://www.ntmail.co.uk/

Microsoft has a list as well:

I won't question you on that one, William, as I have never had the need to
use it. I have maybe played around with it a little bit, and seemed that
for basic needs, it might be adequate. The other thing that I thought about
was that if cost is a prohibitive option, it is free. (I am sure that there
are other Free SMTP servers out there as well).

BTW - do you thing MS improved upon IIS SMTP server with W2K, or not? Just
curious.

Because it sucks.

There are plenty of SMTP server options out there. They are not difficult
to write even.

If the company isn't big enough to use Exchange, or doesn't want to pay for
it, what is wrong with using IIS SMTP Server? Won't this accomplish what
you want? I think you'll find it should have the functionality that you
(they) need.

Hello All,

Does anybody know of any good alternatives to Exchange. I have a client
that has about 5 users and doesn't want to pay the price for Exchange so
i am searching for a cheaper, or better yet free, alternative. Any
recommendations?
