They just use what's available. I was being a smart <filters.txt>.

Now if you schedule your backup to conflict with the maintenance window THEN
you have real resource competition.

"They don't compete for resources" how can this be? Same server ...Same raid
array... 15 Pub defrags I could buy this behavior if pub was changing but in
my case it's pretty static.

I don't think so. You set the maintenance window and it does what it can
therein.

They don't compete for resources, but they do maximize them. And that is
what you bought them for.

Anyone know if this changes in E2K with multiple stores, do you have the
ability to set different maintenance times on the stores or do they all run
defrags at the same time competing for resources?

I don't believe you can tune the Information Store Maintenance to work on
just the PRIV.EDB and not the PUB.EDB during a maintenance period. They are
taken as a whole. I currently have a 66 Gbyte store, and it takes just over
24 hours to make an uninterrupted pass through the PRIV, while the PUB gets
a pass every four hours during that same period of time.

Priv is 24 GB Pub is 500MB Dir is 130MB, The IS backs up in 3hrs both Priv
and Pub. Not a problem. I'd just like more control of defrag process seems
like a waste to go thru 15 online defrags on Pub edb while doing 1 online
defrag of Priv. Since they are hitting the same resources.

How large is a large priv? maybe you should look at splitting the priv.
Are you able to back it up in a timely manor?

Using the Exchange Admin for 5.5 you can only set hours for IS
Maintenance.
Since I have a large Priv.edb and a small Pub.edb, defrag will run on
the Pub.edb amd Dir.edb multiple times while
trying to complete one defrag on the Priv.edb. Is there any way to set
the defrags so another Pub.edb
defrag or Dir.edb defrag will not startup until the next maintenance
cycle or until the defrag on Priv.edb completes?
