You could put an SMTP relay on a server in the DMZ and have it relay to your Exchange server.  But I would avoid putting the Exchange server on the DMZ.  Relay such as NA WebShield SMTP (I can't believe I just suggested an NAI product, use TREND's if you do this).  You used to have Sendmail for SMTP but that is no longer available.  Heck, I think you could even use the SMTP in IIS as a relay to internal email if you really want to segragate your Exchange server from the outside world.

From what I can see I extremely happy I posed this to the list.  Lucky for me this so called consultant was in trying to drum up some buisness and it didn't cost anything.  I don't think I will let him back in the doors either.

We are going to be moving our Exchange 5.5 sp4 server into our DMZ off our firewall from our internal network.  I know there is something that must be done as far as configuring the communication ports that exchange uses.  Does anyone have a good resource for this information on making these changes?
