Andy,

Are you backing up at the mailbox level?

If all you need is to restore a mailbox, its much easier to simply add the
DR server to the existing production network. Simply redirect the Info Store
Restore to the DR box, Run the Consistency Adjuster, apply the necessary
perms to the restored mailbox and spit it out to a Pst. Since you are
creating a new site and org on the DR server, you dont even need to use the
existing prod SA account.

Carol,

If you build the DR server as an offline PDC and create a service account
with the same username and password as the production service account, you
can restore the Information Store, but not the directory. You can then run
IS/DS consistency adjuster to create the directory objects to match the
mailboxes which were restored. The identical directory hierarchy will have
to be in place for the IS/DS adjuster to create the mailboxes. This won't
use your production SAM database, so any accounts will have to be created
manually.

My test network includes a BDC built on the live network, then moved to the
test network. The restore is done to an Exchange server on the test network
which matches the live server. Authentication is provided by the BDC,
therefore no renaming of the test Exchange server is required.

Carol,
Renaming was necessary forme because the DR exch was a BDC to reflect the
live network. I have used 2 machines as well but made the other a PDC. What
is your configuration?

I use 2 machines - 1 BDC and 1 for Exchange. No renaming necessary.

Is there a step by step method of how to restore from an online backup to a
test exchange server? The way I've tried to do it is to build DR server
similar to roigin in config but not Spec, ie different manufacturers.
Installed NT 4 sp6 and made it BDC. Connected the BDC to live network to
pull acccount info, having given it a name different to the live Exchange
box. Once account info is on box, disconnected from live network and
installed Exchang 5.5, sp4 and restored databases.

Problem is when I get to the point of rename DR box to live box on the test
network the NT accounts disappear and I get stuck.

Exchange 5.5 SP4 on Winnt 4 SP6

Any ideas?
