It depends on your resources pal.  Do you have the space on your Exchange server to have Deleted Item Retention turned on?  If you do have it turned on, then BLB's are really not necessary.  If you cannot have DIRT turned on, then BLB's will give you an option to restore a mailbox, even one message from a mailbox without having to do a restore to a test server, exmerge it to recover it.

Personally, I am currently having to do BLB's, but when my new Exchange server that was supposed to be here last week, does finally get here and is up & running, I will not be doing BLB's, but will be relying on DIRT to do message recovery from.

While it is also in the FAQ's...  Most of the professionals here shun BLB's...

i'd have to admit that is a good rule

another quick question

i have managed to finally get our backup server to see the exchange box, and is backing up the "Microsoft Exchange Directory" & "Microsoft Exchange Information Store".

i have also got the option to backup "Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes"

have i made the correct selection or not?

from what i can understand, Brick Level Backups are not the way to go, i am unsure how this relates to my selections.

sorry to be a pain in the ass first thing on a monday morning :(

exchange 5.5 SP4, NT4 SP6a, Backup Exec 8.6

cheers in advance

That's my rule too!

We have a new office opening this weekend with a whole bunch of brand new servers.  Guess what?  They don't get to use them cuz the backup solution hasn't been approved.  Too bad for them, I don't put machines in production with no backup solution...

My rule is that backups are in place and running well before anything goes live. No good backups, no live servers.

Will you have time when your server crashes and you have no backups?

Do you have the Exchange Agent for BE?  This will allow you to do "online" backups of the directory and Information store which will be sufficient for disaster recovery.

Ditto, I have a backup server who's only function in life is to do backups so I touch all my servers remotely to do backups, Exchange, File/Print, Oracle, Novell (yes I still have two Novell servers, I do get to decommission one this weekend).  It must be a backup software that is Exchange aware....

Define "another box"...  I do remote backups if you take into account I have an actual backup server that does nothing but perform backups.
