If it is connected, and DNS is set up, then uh, yes, it is LIVE. Exch 5.5 is extremely easy to relay off of if you don't have your setting right. Do you have a firewall somewhere too?
I would not necessarily call relaying a "hack" though. It is more of an uncomfortable itch in the lower extremities. I have been hacked before, and relayed off of before.
