As other have already said, put the PF up in the FAVORITES to get the unread messages listing. Be warned though, this only the number of unread messages BY THAT PARTICULAR USER, not in the PF taken as a whole.
I only say this because you identified the people that wanted this information as MANAGEMENT. I don't know of a tool that you can run against a PF to get the number of messages users have ignored completely.
