If they havent opened up all the various RPC ports involved for MAPI connections and NSPI connections, or published the Exchange server via ISA, then this isnt going to work.

A normal MAPI connection or RPC/HTTP? With Exchange 2003, you need to have both short name and long name resolution working. If you are using RPC/HTTP, then that is entirely different kettle of fish.
