Well, Cisco does not translate server name to ip. It translates the outside IP
to an inside IP.

But your plan to use the old IP on the new server is 100 percent correct.. And
the best/easiest way to proceed.

Thanks Sherry

It just hit me that it is not the name but the IP I want to reuse. DNS MX
points to mail.domain.com and mail.domain.com points to IP address, Cisco
translates servername to IP so I change the old server to some other IP then
reuse the "mail" IP on the new server - the name of the server does not
matter. Correct?

Thanks
Bill

No. Both Exchange servers have to be up and on the network at the same time.
Get used to a new Exchange server name.

Thanks to Jim and John for the insight. The swing method or moving the
mailboxes seems very straight forward. Another question relates to if
there is a way to reuse the existing server name?

I would bring up another server in the Exch. Org and Mailbox move people
to it through Exchange, and public folders and all that. You can even
schedule the mailbox moves to happen at 3 am..........
