Why didn"t microsoft include part of exchange a backup solution that was easy
for user to recover from(either a mailbox, email, or store)?

I know of keep deleted items but not the same thing.

Good point (even if 2003 market size is orders of magnitude +AD4- 2007/2010),
but why claim support of Ex2003 in the first place when there's no one in
the world who would say it's good?

Yea, MSFT stock price and all, but just sayin it sucks to deal with :)

+AD4-
+AD4- Exchange 2003 support is sub-par because DPM was designed to work with
+AD4- VSS providers and writers. The Exchange 2003 VSS support was sub-par.
+AD4-
+AD4- DPM shines with Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010, especially with block-
+AD4- level and real-time restores. It's a great product.
+AD4-
+AD4- I agree with your comments - about ANY piece of software - that you
+AD4- should fully evaluate it and not purchase it just from a sales demo.
+AD4-
+AD4- But Exchange 2003 is old. Very old in computer terms. It was designed
and
+AD4- written in 2000-2001. Windows, Exchange, and backup solutions have come
+AD4- very far since then.

+AD4- Subject: RE: Backup Software for Exchange 2007
+AD4-
+AD4- We are looking to replace Backup Exec (generally) and did not find our
+AD4- full replacement in DPM (we had really hoped). We are now using a
+AD4- combination of Acronis and native ntbackup to take care of our Exchange
+AD4- 2003SP2. We'll be evaluating the NetApp snap manager for exchange real
+AD4- soon now.
+AD4-
+AD4- Here is a dose of DPM reality.
+AD4-
+AD4- What I highly recommend to anyone not experienced with DPM (and looking
+AD4- at getting it) is to be sure to implement a full lab environment to
+AD4- assure that what the product actually does will meet your expectations
+AD4- before dropping the +ACQAJAAk-. I cannot stress enough that this is NOT a
+AD4- product to buy based on a sales demo or even after a cursory test
+AD4- install/restore.
+AD4- Make sure it works on the exact configuration you have in production at
+AD4- the limits you need, particularly if you will AT ALL be using it with
+AD4- Exchange 2003.
+AD4-
+AD4- The truth of what dpm appears to be:
+AD4-
+AD4- -Cute wrapper around exutil, ntbackup, (etc... for other products)+ADs-
cute
+AD4- because the interface crashes sometimes.
+AD4- -Tight integration with Windows VSS
+AD4- -Some reporting/monitoring and client management tools (rough, some
parts
+AD4- better than others)
+AD4-
+AD4- That's it I'm afraid+ADs- you could probably emulate 90+ACU- of the
backup and
+AD4- restore functionality with some .cmd/powershell scripts against
WMI/WinRM
+AD4- and the task scheduler. That's not meant to be a low blow, but more to
+AD4- say there's certainly no magic here regardless of the slick marketing
the
+AD4- DPM team has put together.
+AD4-
+AD4- There are high points:
+AD4- - The PSS team for this product is great which is awesome since it's
such
+AD4- a fragile product.
+AD4- - It seems to work better with SQL
+AD4- - I can say it's nearly seamless with Windows file backups
+AD4-
+AD4- BUT, its Exchange integration, particularly with 2003 is amazingly sub-
+AD4- par. The respective management of the Exchange and DPM dev teams don't
+AD4- and won't get along with each other resulting in the customer being the
+AD4- loser+ACE-
+AD4-
+AD4- The DPM 2010 story is a bit better, adding some nice functionality for
+AD4- client/laptop backups and getting rid of several interface annoyances.
+AD4- Client backup may be its sweet spot. DPM 2010 has not really addressed
+AD4- any Exchange concerns in 2010 and won't be from the communication I can
+AD4- see.
+AD4-
+AD4- If DPM only cost a few hundred bucks there's no way I would've said all
+AD4- this. It's a lot more than that, so the lipstick-on-a-pig deserved it.
+AD4- Think of WinNT circa 3.1...
+AD4-
+AD4- Sorry for the rant, but I just can't believe anyone could recommend this
+AD4- product after having it in use here going on a year.
