I guess he meant Exchange 2007, in which case the answer is that
although the overall i/o load on storage has reduced, the reduction is
predominantly in READ through increased caching. This has changed the
balance of i/o and so they now recommend raid-1 or raid-10 for the
database store due to the relatively poor write performance of RAID-5.
 
Note this doesn't apply for Exchange 2010, now the reduction is even
more so performance isn't really an issue....
