I would make a bet that one of them is actually not a binary XLS file, but an XML or XHTML file. Open them up in your favorite editor and see. I have an e-mail with two .XLS attachments where one opens directly and one has to be saved to disk first. .XLS is not in the Level1FileTypes or Level2FileTypes registry key on the OWA server. Why the difference in behavior? It seems like it could be because of the Level1MIMETypes & Level2MIMETypes registry keys. Can different attachments have different MIME types and how can I tell?
