Subject: Can You Tell Me Why?

Exchange 2003 / Outlook 2003/2007

I've had a couple users who have been unable to send email to specific
external recipients, different ones for each user. They either receive
a 5.1.2 NDR ("the recipient's destination email system is unknown or
invalid") or one indicating "None of your e-mail accounts could send to
this recipient." Other users have been able to send to the same
recipients without a problem. DNS is working fine and they can make
telnet connections from their machines to the destination mail servers.
Both users have connections to other internal users'
mailboxes.

I resolved this by having them send a message to ab...@domain.com using
the recipients' domain name and they received the "email address does
not exist" NDR. Then, miraculously, they were both able to send and
receive a reply from the original recipients.

While I'm glad the issue seems to be resolved I have no idea why this
worked. What's up with that?
