What does performance monitoring say on the UM servers? Are you using managed
switches? If so, what are the error counts/rates on the switchports? If not,
what are the (less reliable) error counts/rates on the perfmon NIC objects?

Subject: Exchange 2010 Unified Messaging Jitter Issue

Recently we have experienced stuttering, drop outs, and audio loops when users
are either leaving messages or checking messages. Our Voice Services team
recently moved from software MTPs to hardware MTPs due to an issue with another
voice-related product. Those issues were sorted out and now everything is
stable again except for the jitter issue with voicemail. They initiated a call
with Cisco support and did Wireshark traces on their end and we have done
Microsoft Network Monitor traces on our end. We have also asked the Networking
team to monitor the performance of the hardware in between the two
environments. As far as we can tell from the traces and the monitoring, the
problem lies with the Exchange UM servers. In the traces it's apparent that
the jitter occurs on the server side. Can anyone offer any insight into why we
may be experiencing this issue? Here are the server and software specs (we
have 2 identical physical boxes both running only the UM role):

Hardware

4x 6-core 2.66GHz processors

16gb RAM

2x RAID10 volumes on 15K disks - OS on one, application on the other

2x Broadcom 1Gig NICs configured in a NIC team using Broadcom software

Software

Win2008R2 RTM

Exchange 2010 SP1 RU2

Thanks,
Anthony
