We are currently working with Ontrack PowerControls for Exchange. I wish it had better search functions (support for regular expressions would be great, I would even settle for decent and/or operators), but it does basic text searches pretty well. I doubt that the average user would want or need these advanced search functions. Their support is pretty decent for non technical people too. I haven't tried opening files from a read only location - you'd have to check with them. They have pretty good presales support. http://www.krollontrack.com/software/powercontrols/
