first's unworkable for x11. We end up with 150ish packages under x/,
which is no good.
Why not just split it?
First 50 packages in x/, then the next 50 in x2/ etc.
Of course that isn't the nicest way to find a package, but it wouldn't require more time to find something than using the last letter.

Or maybe x/1/ x/2 instead, or even x/ with some subdirs with „proper“ names?
