I can confirm that my workaround works for my pager. Making sure that its
address is first in any set of email transactions allows it to be sent without
a problem. However, any email destined for Google's servers seems to run into
this problem occasionally. In my experience this is particularly the case with
monit. 

I suppose the next steps would be to try this same setup with a different MTA
and see what happens. If we see similar behavior, it may be the way monit
crafts emails causes Google's servers to have a bad reaction -- which somehow
leads to duplicate spool files. It's definitely a bit of a stretch.
