For right now, just write a shell/ruby/perl/python/c/java/php/ whatever script that takes some arguments and call it in the authenticator. I've had to do that for broken SASL implementations where the sasltest program worked but the SASL plugin proper didn't. There may even be an imaptest script provided with an IMAP server somewhere that does something similar just to see if authentication is working.

As far as exim and the rest of this, Philip will either wishlist it or not. When he doesn't, you have to do the work yourself or do without. End of story. (everybody likes patches though, and a properly done patch might get his attention)
