Hello out there,

[ exim 4.51 ]
in our environment we deliver messages via LMTP (via socket)
to the cyrus mail system. From time to time mails bounce with
quite unspecific error message:

This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  (generated from [EMAIL PROTECTED])

Looking for the Message-ID I found in the log file:
        "LMTP error after end of data: 554 5.6.0 Message contains NUL
characters"

I'd like to return this error to the sender. How?

If you don't want do accept such messages at all you can reject them in the acl_smtp_data section before any routers or transports. For example

# Check for NUL characters
  deny message = Body contains $body_zerocount NUL charcter(s)
       log_message = Message denied, \
                     body contains $body_zerocount NUL charcter(s)
       condition = ${if >{$body_zerocount}{0}{1}{0}}

    Best regards from Dresden
