Be that as it may, this seems to me the most (only) straightforward 
solution available.

FWIW, while I agree with Tony's statement above, I think your idea 
for a generic query-style text file lookup is pretty sexy in its own 
right.  I can it being useful for lots of different things.  I hope 
it gets consideration on that basis...
