I think you're onto something worthwhile, Marc.  I hope it works as well on
the machines as it seems to in thought experiments.

As you noticed from the responses, Unix/Linux comes with a nice array of
tools.  Essentially, that's what happens when AT&T (the old one) has college
students all over the country doing slave labor ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H class
projects (and fun hacking on their own).
