Hard to say - probably both.  

More connections generally, but quite a few hosts with multiple 
connections too (we currently limit this to 5).

What seemed to be new was connections hanging around after getting 5xx at 
RCPT time.  Hence "drop" more effective than "deny".

However, it kinda looks like in last few days less of this is happening.  
Perhaps spammy has modified the botnet, again...
