They haven't modified Exim to 'run' on Debian. AFAIK Exim was/is primarily *developed* in a Linux environment. The 'generic Exim' package needs nothing much different between a *BSD and a Linux save the dirtree location of the install and method of startup (rc vs initd). What they *have* modified is the manner in which the ~/configure file is created and modified. Automated or assisted with scripts that allege to make it easier to get it right and harder to get it wrong. To be fair, they probably do just that much of the time. But if you need to do something 'special' or otherwise don't choose to use that option then the 'generic' single ~/configure file will work the same for you on Debian as it does for me (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris...). The proper list for generic Exim with monolithic ~/configure file is right here. Regardless of OS. The modular knee-bone connected to the ass-bone by way of the neck-bone using a bunch of clever scripts, OTOH, needs, and has - its own list. Both will get the job done.
